Looking for something unique to play with that gets great gas mileage? Look no farther than this 1928 Ford Model A Highboy Pick Up Truck created by Muscle Up Performance and Hot Rod Shop.
The truck, which will be on display and put up for sale this weekend at the Thresherman's Park Swap Meet in Janesville, WI, is a real head turner according to Muscle Up Performance owner Rich Bickle.
"I get all kind of looks when we drive it down the street," Bickle stated. "It's a real throwback to the hot rods of the 1940's and 1950's with its fenderless, stripped down look and flat-black paint. Everywhere we take it, people stop to look at it."
The crew at Muscle Up Performance created the classic from a number of parts from around the country and put the truck together in a matter of weeks.
"We bought the body and chassis, some V-8 60 blocks, cranks and other engine parts and decided to build it into a high boy," stated Bickle. "The engine is pretty much what a midget race car used to run in the 1930's. It just fit in there so nice, looks so good, and runs so nice. It's amazing how great it runs and it still keeps the truck correct for the period."
Powered by the Flathead V-8 - courtesy of master engine builder Rich Bickle, Sr. - the truck features a standard Model A axle and with a disc brake upgrade as a safety concession. The Muscle Up team kept the truck as stock looking as possible using the stock cowl gas tank and other touches such as the original gauge package in the interior.
According to Bickle, there were some concessions to turning the classic truck into a custom hot rod.
"We gave the truck a little bomber look with some tuck and roll seats in the interior," said Bickle. "We shot it with flat black and with the stock looking wheels to give it that retro look. It really looks like a period hot rod. It got a lot of looks at the couple of shows we took it to last fall before we parked it for the winter."
As far as drivability, Bickle indicated the Model A pick up is an agreeable local cruiser.
"It's not something you'd want to drive across the country, but you can drive it from town to town, from car show to car show, without any problems," Bickle stated. "It's great, inexpensive way for someone in a local car club to get a completely finished and extremely easy to maintain cruiser. It's a very unique vehicle and it's ready for fun."
The 1928 Model A Highboy Pick Up will be one of the many items on display and for sale this weekend at the Thresherman's Park Swap Meet just north of Janesville, WI. Located
on HWY 51 just north of the city, the two-day event is set for 7 a.m. - Dusk both Saturday and Sunday, July 26-27.
"This is usually a pretty interesting swap meet," said Bickle, who will also have an example of Muscle Up Performance's full frame chassis replacement on display at the show. "You get all kinds of stuff at this show - everything from antique tractors to incredibly cool muscle cars. It will be a neat show to be at and we expect quite a crowd both days."
